Video Games of 2013 [GO]

This is where a lot of the magic happened this year. Writing this list each year is one of my favorite things to do at the end of the year. It forces some perspective on what I played and coheres my thoughts on the experiences this year. I spent less time with video games this year, to the tune of 19 fewer games played. 2013 heralded a shift toward portable games for me thanks to a rapidly maturing 3DS library and a nice, new phone. ...

What I've Been Doing 3 Sept 2013 [FB/IB/F/BT/GO]

The picture’s from the opening year, but I was definitely there this weekend. Movies No, but this week, probably! TV Sherlock - The Chinese banker episode is so bad, comparatively speaking… Breaking Bad - Only watched a few mins in the morning while waiting for Katie. House of Cards - I’m not a fan of the “narration” at all, but a political revenge thriller does sound kind of awesome. ...

What I've Been Doing 21 Aug 2013 [FB/IB/F/BT/GO]

I spend every day horrified at the knowledge that this book exists. Whoa, whoops! I’m late again! Movies Nope! TV Breaking Bad - The cold war between Walter and Skyler is tough to watch. I haven’t had much time to really progress, but I’m intrigued by the way this season is gonna end. Orange is the New Black - This show remains really awesome. Just excellent acting and stories. Worth checking out. ...

What I've Been Doing 12 Aug 2013 [FB/IB/F/BT/GO]

This picture is from an old Otakon, but the cosplayers were out in full force this weekend yet again. With Katie away for the weekend I took full advantage of my video game availability. Like, super full advantage. Movies Elysium - Katie didn’t really want to see this one, so Min and I went to see it solo. Her impressions from the trailer were right (and I should have realized that good blockbusters don’t come out in August). It’s just overloaded with “purpose”, but without the requisite seriousness. The movie is just not good enough for the gravity it’s seeking to have. Not enough robot explosions either. Can’t win them all, I guess. Should have watched Pacific Rim again instead ...

What I've Been Doing 5 Aug 2013 [FB/IB/F/BT/GO]

The awesome cast of Orange is the New Black (Photo by missmegsblogcontent) Lots of talk on the internets about how Orange is the New Black was a fantastic show not worth missing. After checking it out, I’ve got to say everyone’s really right. Movies Nope, but probably this week! TV The Bridge - Demian Bichir is doing fine, fine work on this show, but the serial killer stuff seems fairly fantastical and he’s almost omnipotent in his power. ...

What I've Been Doing 30 July 2013 [FB/IB/F/BT/GO]

Back from Seattle! One long, but very fun jetlag-filled week has come to an end and it’s time to summarize my pop culture consumption (hint: it’s not that much). Movies Negative. TV The Newsroom - There was a moment in this week’s episode where Olivia Munn’s character was led to an office by the wrist by a man that I thought they were going to let pass without comment. It was still gross and terrible, but at least they said something. Also the Jim on the Romney bus storyline is just the worst, guys. Seriously. This show is really self-righteous and not very good at all. ...

What I've Been Doing 15 July 2013 [FB/IB/F/BT/GO]

Giant mechs and giant monsters. I’m all in. (Photo courtesy Domenico) You know how the saying goes, right? When the cat’s away, go see a kaiju homage movie. It was silly stupid fun and it was awesome. Movies Tokyo Godfathers - Min and I were looking for something to watch during dinner and I finally convinced him to check out Satoshi Kon’s fairy tale/holiday story. I love how happy this movie is and ends. Very few mind games for a Satoshi Kon flick too. ...

What I've Been Doing 8 July 2013 [FB/IB/F/BT/GO]

It’s my first time experiencing a Shakespearian comedy (Picture courtesy Pinay New Yorker) Sure, it’s not like watching live theater for real or anything, but this was my first tie experiencing one of Shakespeare’s comedies (not counting liberal adaptations like 10 Things I Hate About You) and I absolutely loved it. More below. Movies This is the End - I wish I could say that I had more fun watching this movie, but it just wasn’t all that funny. Then there’s the fact that I’ll be forever embarrassed by jumping and shouting “AH!” during a jump scare. ...

What I've Been Doing 24 June 2013 AND 1 July 2013 [FB/IB/F/BT/GO]

This has nothing to do with what I did this past couple of weeks, but I love this tea. Actually, I did drink a lot of it over the past few weeks… Whoa, whoops! I forgot to get this up on time! I forgot to even post this yesterday! Been too busy, but we’re back now! ...

What I've Been Doing 17 June 2013 [FB/IB/F/BT/GO]

Was there a Franklin gag that I just missed? (Picture by Tom Trager) I went to three baseball games this week, one graduation party, and one father’s day dinner. There wasn’t much time for anything, but I still got some gaming in. Movies Nope. TV Arrested Development - Partway through S4 I realized that this season was just a giant puzzle box meant to be deciphered as you went along. Either you like to do that or you don’t. Either you like the season or you don’t. Also, I’m not the only one who thinks Arrested Development is like One Hundred Years of Solitude! ...
