What I’ve Been Doing 5 Nov. 2012 [FB/IB/F/BT/GO]

It was either a poster of this or Magic Mike. I think I made the right choice…(Picture courtesy Silver Denz)

Min’s schooling may have conspired against my ability to see Wreck-It Ralph last week, but that didn’t stop me from seeing at least one flick I wanted to see. The other was a girlfriend request. I’ll let you figure out which was which.

Movies

Argo – There’s a reason this movie has so much Oscar buzz. It’s fantastic. Absolutely the best movie I’ve seen so far this year. Incredibly acted and incredibly tense. It’s essentially a heist movie, guys, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Magic Mike – A little less good than I was led to believe it was, but it’s definitely got that Soderbergh art project feel. Think more like the slower, improvised/real-seeming conversations of The Girlfriend Experience or Haywire and less like an Oceans movie.

TV

Happy Endings – So much laughing. This show is super funny. Almost done tearing through season 2 and season 3 has been pretty solid. The piñata bit was some great physical comedy.

Arrested Development – I agree with Tiffany that S3 kind of goes off the rails, plotwise, but there’s still plenty of laughs to be had in the tail end of S2 and the start of S3. Too bad I didn’t get to see the mole one.

Project Runway: All Stars – Weird not to have the normal hosts/judges, but still approximately the same show.

The Amazing Race – Caught some older episodes to get Tiffany prepped for the new one, but we didn’t get a chance to watch the new one live thanks to Magic Mike.

Cheers – First time I’ve ever seen an episode of this show from start to end. Very much what you’d expect from a sitcom that is doing everything it’s supposed to perfectly. The ideal sitcom firing decently on all cylinders, although I did not see Diane. Maybe it’s a post-Diane season?

Music

Aw, hell, how about some more K-Pop? This one is by Ga In, it’s called “Bloom”, and it’s pretty darn catchy.

Books

A Confederacy of Dunces – I didn’t get too far in, but this book is hailed as such a brilliant accomplishment that I felt like I had to check it out at least once in my life.

Video Games

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box – Trains! Not too bad so far. I like the whole “opening the box will kill you” mystery. Seems neat.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask – Mostly just doing daily puzzles here until I can beat the other games and start the narrative with gusto. At least I get something new to do each day, although these first seven have been fairly simple.

Pokemon White Version 2 – I’ve almost filled an entire box with pokemon that have “died”. This is a lot harder than it seems and I’ve only got one gym left before the elite four. I worry that I won’t even have a full team to go up against the hardest trainers in the game…

Need for Speed: Most Wanted – Autolog has been a fantastic draw to keep me coming in and trying to challenge/beat all the crazy times my Giant Bomb friends are setting, but the way the game is structured keeps me from moving on to new cars and trying new styles of events. I need to be less obsessive and completist and more worried about fun.
